Today, almost everyone owns a car. The luxury and utility of a car just can’t be ignored. It is all outstanding when you can get your car easily due to proximity and wide availability. But it becomes a chore when a vehicle you desire isn’t available nearby and you have to import it.
Importing vehicles doesn’t only include cars but also other modes of transport like boat, trailers, horse, bikes, etc.
The USA has always been known to be ahead of time and technology. This stands true even when it comes to cars and other vehicles. When you live in Canada and fancy a car from The USA, the question arises on how to import a car to Canada from the USA?
So let us understand the process of import of vehicles:
[Vehicles being manufactured 15 years ago and well washed are precursors to the process]
1] Find your agency!
An admissible and compliant importing is a must when it comes to importing vehicles. Various agencies function to ensure imported vehicles maintain the safety standards of Canada.
2] Paperwork
Every import relies highly on documentation. Documents for both- the U.S. Customs and Border Protective Agency and the Canadian Border Services Agency should be produced and maintained. The documents include original title, Recall clearance letter (U.S. only), the Statement/Certificate of Origin, the Bill of sale, etc.
3] AES & 72 hours prior to export
An AES, Automated export system filing must be sent prior to 72 hour notice. Once approved; an internal transaction number is issued. The US customs and borders protection performs a thorough check which takes about 72 hours if the paperwork is appropriate.
4] Receiving the import
The importer should carry documents like the bill of sale, title, Transport Canada Import Form 1, etc. and be present to receive the import at the point of entry. The CBSA processes the import and allows the importer to go ahead with the procedure.
5] Fee
Once you get your vehicle in your hands, all you have to do is pay the RIV fee and tax. Once verified, buyer receives a form 2. Form 1 and 2 stamped by the CBSA, ends the process and you legally become the possessor of your dream vehicle.
